The taxes a business here deals with
A small business in Namibia deals with two Acts administered by NamRA: the Income Tax Act 24 of 1981 and the Value-Added Tax Act 10 of 2000. There is no turnover or presumptive tax in the Income Tax Act, so a small trader is taxed on profit through a return like anyone else, with VAT added once registered.
If you employ people, three more obligations follow. You withhold employees' tax from pay and pay it over within 20 days (Schedule 2, paragraph 2(1) of the Income Tax Act). You must deduct each employee's social security contribution from their pay and pay it, with your own share, to the Social Security Commission within the prescribed period (Social Security Act 34 of 1994, section 21(4)). And you keep a record of every employee for five years (Labour Act 11 of 2007, section 130).
Late payment of income tax, employees' tax or provisional tax attracts interest under sections 79(2) and 80(2) of the Income Tax Act on top of any additional tax under section 66.
