On a bill of exchange or cheque, if the amount is written in both words and figures and they differ, the amount in words is the amount payable (Bills of Exchange Act 22 of 2003, section 7(2)). So write the words carefully and make them match the figures. The Act defines a cheque as a bill drawn on a bank and payable on demand.
