What to get right on a software developer / it services quotation
- Write a features-in-scope list and say plainly that anything else is a change request, quoted separately.
- Tie payments to milestones the client can see working, not to dates. It keeps both sides honest about progress.
- Separate the build from running costs. Hosting, domains, third-party APIs and maintenance recur, and clients forget them.
Questions people ask
Fixed price or time and materials?
A fixed price works when the scope is short and clear. For anything that will evolve, quote a day rate with an estimate per milestone and let the client approve each one.
Who owns the code?
Say it on the quotation. Usually the client owns the code they paid for once the final payment clears, and you keep your reusable libraries. Leaving it unstated causes trouble when the client changes developers.
Should hosting be on my quotation?
If you are setting it up, yes, as a recurring line naming the provider. If the client pays the host directly, say so in the notes so they budget for it.
