Why does a cheque show the amount twice?

Writing the total in figures and again in words is the oldest check in bookkeeping. A digit can be altered or misread; a written line cannot be changed as quietly. Most banks will not pay a cheque whose two amounts disagree, and where they do pay, it is usually the words that stand.

How do I write naira and kobo in words?

Write the naira first, then the kobo, joined by “and”, and close with “only”: “One thousand two hundred and fifty naira and fifty kobo only”. The closing “only” exists to stop anything being added after your last word.

Does the naira take an s in the plural?

No. It is fifty naira, not fifty nairas, and the same is true of kobo. Several other currencies behave this way, including the rand and the Zambian kwacha, which is why the converter carries a name for each currency rather than adding an s to everything.

Can I use it for a currency other than the naira?

Yes. Every currency your browser knows is in the list, and each uses its own minor unit: cents for the dollar, pence for the pound, fils for the dirham. Currencies with no minor unit, such as the yen, show none, and the Kuwaiti dinar correctly takes three decimal places rather than two.

What about lakh and crore?

Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan and Nepali amounts group differently: after the first thousand the digits run in pairs, so 2,500,000 rupees reads as twenty-five lakh rather than two million five hundred thousand. The converter follows that system automatically for those currencies.
