What to get right on a freelance designer quotation
- Quote by deliverable, not by the hour, unless the client asked for hours. A list of what they will receive is easier to approve than an estimate of your time.
- Fix the number of revision rounds and price an extra round as its own line, so the third round of changes is a sale and not a favour.
- Say when the client receives the source files and the right to use them. On final payment is the usual answer, and it belongs on the quotation.
Questions people ask
How much deposit should a designer ask for?
Half up front is common with a new client, with the balance on delivery of the final files. Put the split in the notes so it is agreed before any concept is drawn.
What if the client keeps adding to the brief?
Point to the quotation. Anything not on the deliverables list is new work, and a short second quotation for the extra items keeps the original price intact.
Do I quote a foreign client in naira or dollars?
Quote in the currency you want to be paid in and show its code, for example USD. Change the currency in the generator and every amount on the quotation prints with it.
