What to get right on a freelance designer invoice

  • State what is included: number of concepts, revisions and file formats. Scope creep starts on the invoice.
  • Note that source files are released on full payment.
  • Agencies and companies deduct 5% WHT on professional fees. Your TIN on the invoice lets them remit it under your name.

Questions people ask

Should I charge VAT on design work?
Only above the โ‚ฆ50 million small-company threshold. Below it, leave VAT off and say so in the notes.
How do I bill foreign clients?
Invoice in naira for Nigerian clients. For foreign clients invoice in their currency and note the payment route.
Can I ask for 50% upfront?
Yes. Send a proforma for the deposit, then a final invoice for the balance on delivery.
