The taxes a business here deals with
A small business in Jamaica deals with one collector for almost everything: Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ). It administers income tax on profits, General Consumption Tax (GCT) on sales, Special Consumption Tax on prescribed goods, and the payroll deductions of PAYE, National Insurance (NIS), National Housing Trust (NHT) and education tax.
Payroll is the monthly rhythm. An employer remits tax and contributions deducted for the previous month by the 14th day of each month, using the Employer's Monthly Statutory Remittance form (S01), and NHT contributions are paid to TAJ in the same way. GCT is a separate monthly return for registered businesses.
Reform has mostly simplified things for new firms. The Minimum Business Tax, a flat $60,000 a year that every company paid whether or not it made a profit, was repealed in 2019, so a business now owes income tax only on actual profit. The most recent change is the split of annual return deadlines between companies and individuals, introduced by TAJ for the 2025 year of assessment.
