Writing amounts in words here
Under the Bills of Exchange Act, a cheque is a bill of exchange drawn on a banker and payable on demand (section 73). Section 9 settles any mismatch between the two ways of writing the amount: where the sum is expressed in words and also in figures and the two differ, the sum denoted by the words is the amount payable.
In practice, the words on a cheque, contract or invoice are the controlling version in Jamaica. Write the dollar amount in full words first, check it against the figures, and treat the words as the amount you are committing to.
