Reduced rates, zero rates and exemptions
The standard GCT rate is 15%. TAJ also lists 10% for tourism, 25% for telephone service and instruments, 2% for books and other printed material, and 5% Advanced GCT.
Zero-rated supplies (section 24 and Part II of the First Schedule) are taxed at 0%, and the seller can still claim input tax credit on related purchases. They include exports of goods and services in prescribed circumstances, animal feed other than pet food, and electricity supplied to residential customers for private use.
Exempt supplies (section 25 and the Third Schedule) carry no GCT, but the seller cannot claim input tax credit. They include residential rent, public postal services, medical, dental, nursing, optical and veterinary services, education and training at approved institutions, life and health insurance, and financial services.
Consumer prices must be tax-inclusive. Section 32(3) of the Consumer Protection Act, inserted in 2012, says a price specified to a consumer includes GCT and any other taxes, duties or charges.
How to calculate GCT in Jamaica
Add: tax = net × 0.15; gross = net × 1.15.
Remove: net = gross ÷ 1.15; tax = gross − net.
