What the TIN is

The TIN is the number Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) assigns to a taxpayer in Zimbabwe. It follows you across every tax you deal with: VAT, income tax and withholding. Businesses that pay you will ask for it before they release payment, because they report their suppliers to Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) by this number.

Who needs one

Every person carrying on a trade or business in Zimbabwe, plus companies, trusts and individuals with income outside the Final Deduction System. The TIN replaced the old BP Number when TaRMS went live in 2023. You now need it for ordinary business life, not just for filing: banks validate payments to ZIMRA against the TIN through their TaRMS integration, and a buyer's TIN is a mandatory field on any fiscal tax invoice.

How to register, step by step

  1. Go to mytaxselfservice.zimra.co.zw and click Sign Up. Give your name, email, phone and a username, then activate the account from the link emailed to you.
  2. Log in and complete the verification code sent to your email or phone.
  3. Choose Register as an Individual, Register as an Organisation, Register as a Representative of a Deceased Taxpayer, or claim an existing BP Number.
  4. Fill in the registration form, attach the supporting documents and submit for ZIMRA approval. Track it on the applications page.
  5. When the TIN is issued, select your payment bank, then add each tax type you need under Taxpayer Profile > Tax Type > New Tax Type.

How to find or check a TIN

ZIMRA publishes no public directory of TINs. What you can verify is a counterparty's tax standing and their invoices. Verify a Tax Clearance Certificate (ITF263) on the TaRMS portal under Verify Tax Clearance Certificate, either by scanning the QR code on the certificate or by entering the TIN and the authentication code printed on it. Verify a fiscal tax invoice at fdms.zimra.co.zw, which returns Valid or an error.
