What the labour law requires on a payslip

Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021 does not prescribe a payslip format. Article 22 requires the employer to pay wages on their due dates under the Ministry's regulations, in UAE dirham unless the contract agrees another currency.

Deductions shown on a payslip are limited by Article 25. Allowed items include loan repayments the worker agreed to in writing, repayment of overpaid wages (up to 20% of the wage), pension and insurance contributions required by law, savings-fund contributions, and disciplinary deductions of no more than 5% of the wage.

A court-ordered debt may take up to a quarter of the wage, and compensation for damage to the employer's tools or goods is capped at five days' wage per month. Whatever the combination of reasons, total deductions or withholdings may not exceed 50% of the wage.

Social contributions on each payslip

Pension contributions to the General Pension and Social Security Authority (GPSSA) apply to UAE nationals, whose registration is mandatory under Federal Law No. 7 of 1999. The employer registers them from the first month of employment. Private-sector employers in all emirates except Abu Dhabi fall under the federal scheme.

The insured employee pays 5% of the Contribution Calculation Salary. A private-sector employer pays 12.5%, because the government bears 2.5% of the 15% employer rate. In the private sector the contribution salary is the salary in the employment contract, including basic pay, bonuses and regular monthly allowances.

The GPSSA publishes the current ceiling and payment calendar on gpssa.gov.ae.
