The rules in the United Arab Emirates
- Payable after 1 year of continuous service.
- Calculated on basic wage only, not on allowances.
- A day's wage is the monthly wage divided by 30.
- Ceiling: 24 months' wage.
- Set by Federal Decree-Law 33/2021, article 51.
Who this covers
Foreign workers on full-time contracts. Emiratis are covered by the pension system instead.
Worth knowing
Calculated on the last basic wage, not total pay. The 1/3 and 2/3 reductions for resignation came from the 1980 law and are not in the 2021 decree-law; the word resign does not appear in it. Days of unpaid absence do not count as service.
