The currency is the UAE Dirham (AED), written "dirham" in the singular and "dirhams" in the plural, with the subunit "fils". The VAT Law itself refers to "one fils of a UAE Dirham" (Article 68).

Under Article 518 of the Commercial Transactions Law (Federal Decree-Law No. 50 of 2022), when a bill of exchange states the sum in letters and in numbers and they differ, the sum in letters prevails. If the sum is written several times in letters, or several times in numbers, the lesser sum prevails. Article 626 applies the bill-of-exchange rules to cheques so far as they fit a cheque's nature.

A cheque must carry the word "Cheque" in the language of the text, an unconditional order to pay a sum, the drawee's name, the payee, the place of payment, the date and place of issue, and the drawer's signature (Article 627).
