Who can list in South Africa, and how we check

In South Africa the word 'accountant' is open to anyone. The Auditing Profession Act protects titles such as registered auditor and public accountant instead, and IRBA keeps that register. Chartered accountants hold CA(SA), AGA(SA) or AT(SA) through SAICA, whose Verify a Member tool may not be used for marketing, so we check it privately and never present the result as our badge. If you file returns or advise on tax, SARS also expects you to be registered through a recognised controlling body.

Questions accountants ask

How do you check SAICA, SAIPA or IRBA membership?
SAICA's Verify a Member tool may be used only to verify membership, never for marketing, so we check privately and point readers to SAICA's page to check for themselves. We could not confirm a working public SAIPA lookup, so we ask for proof of membership and photo ID. Registered auditors are on IRBA's register, which the law keeps open to public inspection; until we confirm its search page we ask for your IRBA registration. We repeat the check every 12 months.
