Issuing a valid invoice here

Issue tax invoices from your own accounting software, till or template; SARS does not have to approve an electronic invoicing set-up. A VAT vendor must issue a tax invoice within 21 days of any supply worth more than R50, whether or not the customer asks. Below R50, a till slip or docket showing the VAT is enough. A zero-rated supply, such as an export, always needs a full tax invoice, however small.

Show price and VAT in one of three accepted ways: price before VAT, VAT and total; the total with a statement that it includes VAT at 15%; or the total and the VAT amount. Invoice in rand, except for zero-rated supplies and some electronic services sold by non-residents. Where the buyer sets the price, as when a co-operative sells a farmer's produce, the buyer may issue the invoice under Binding General Ruling 15; otherwise SARS must approve it in writing.

On 17 August 2026 SARS published a VAT Modernisation Consultation Paper proposing phased e-invoicing and e-reporting. Comments are due by 16 October 2026; no start date is set.
