Writing amounts in words here
South Africa's currency is the rand, written with the symbol R in front of the figure. SARS publications separate thousands with a space and use a decimal comma for cents, as in R17 820 or R11,50.
Cheques have left the payment system. The South African Reserve Bank, the Financial Sector Conduct Authority, the Payments Association of South Africa and the Banking Association South Africa ended the issuing and acceptance of cheques on 31 December 2020, and banks no longer accept them for deposit or cash. The rule on mismatched amounts still governs bills of exchange: under section 7(2) of the Bills of Exchange Act 34 of 1964, if a sum is written in both words and figures and they differ, the amount in words is payable.
