Questions people ask
- Why does a cheque show the amount twice?
- Writing the total in figures and again in words is the oldest check in bookkeeping. A digit can be altered or misread; a written line cannot be changed as quietly. Most banks will not pay a cheque whose two amounts disagree, and where they do, it is usually the words that stand.
- How should the ZAR amount be written?
- Write the main unit first, then the minor unit after the joining word, and close with the word this converter adds at the end. That closing word exists to stop anything being written after your last word.
- Can I use another currency?
- Yes. Every currency in the list is available and each uses its own minor unit, so the dollar gets cents, the pound pence and the dirham fils. Currencies with no minor unit show none, and the Kuwaiti dinar correctly takes three decimal places rather than two.
- What about lakh and crore?
- Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan and Nepali amounts group differently: after the first thousand the digits run in pairs, so 2,500,000 rupees reads as twenty-five lakh rather than two million five hundred thousand. The converter follows that system automatically for those currencies.
- Is anything uploaded?
- No. The conversion runs in your browser, so the figure never leaves your device. There is no account and no server involved.
- Is this indicative, like the tax figures?
- No, and it is the one tool here that is not. The tax rates elsewhere on this site are researched estimates we ask you to confirm. A converted amount is either exactly right or it is a fault, and we would want to hear about it.
