Writing amounts in words here
Vietnamese dong is written in words as "đồng", which does not change form for plurals: "mười triệu đồng", "một đồng". Amounts on contracts and instruments are normally written as figures followed by the words, for example "10.000.000 đồng (Bằng chữ: mười triệu đồng)".
For negotiable instruments, Article 8 of the Law on Negotiable Instruments (49/2005/QH11) requires the amount to be written in both figures and words. On a bill of exchange or promissory note, if the two differ, the amount in words governs payment (Articles 16(3) and 53(3)); if the amount is written more than once and the versions differ, the smallest amount written in words governs.
A cheque is stricter. Under Article 58(6), the amount in figures must equal the amount in words, and if they differ the cheque has no payment value. A cheque with a mismatch is therefore refused rather than paid at the lower figure.
