Is Overtime Pay Required in Rwanda?

There is no statutory overtime rate in Rwanda. Here is what the law actually says, and what does apply instead.

What applies instead

  • Overtime starts after 45 hours a week.
  • Set by Law N° 66/2018 art. 43; Ministerial Order n° 005/19.20 arts. 2, 4.

Worth knowing

Stronger than silence. The Ministerial Order states that hours worked by day, by night, at the weekend or on a public holiday are the same and are paid equally. The entitlement is compensatory rest within 30 days; if it is not given, the hours are paid at gross salary with no uplift.
