Writing amounts in words here
The Rwandan franc, abbreviated FRW, is the monetary unit of Rwanda (article 34 of Law nº 48/2017 on the National Bank of Rwanda), and obligations made in Rwanda are treated as expressed and settled in francs unless a law or the parties say otherwise (article 37). In words, write the whole number followed by the currency name: "five thousand Rwandan francs". The word is "franc" for one and "francs" for any other amount.
Article 21 of Law nº 060/2021 of 14 October 2021 on negotiable instruments requires the amount to be written both in words and in figures. If the two differ, the sum written in words is the amount payable. A material alteration to the amount, the date, the time of payment or the place of payment that not all the parties have agreed to makes the instrument void (articles 73 and 74). A cheque with a wrong amount is therefore best replaced, not overwritten.
