The rules in Japan
- Overtime starts after 40 hours a week.
- Overtime starts after 8 hours a day.
- Limit: 45 hours a month, 360 a year.
- The rate applies to your normal gross hourly pay.
- Set by Labour Standards Act No. 49 of 1947 arts. 32, 36, 37.
Worth knowing
Above 60 overtime hours in a month the rate rises to 50%, for firms of every size since 1 April 2023. Night work stacks on top, reaching 75% in that band.
