Writing amounts in words here
Japan's currency unit is the yen (円). The Act on Currency Units sets the face value at whole yen, and counts sen (1/100 yen) and rin (1/10 sen) as accounting units below a yen (Art. 2), so in practice amounts are written in whole yen.
If a cheque shows the amount both in words and in figures and the two differ, the amount in words is the cheque amount (Cheques Act Art. 9). The same rule applies to bills of exchange (Bills of Exchange Act Art. 6). If an amount is written more than once in words, or more than once in figures, and the entries differ, the smallest amount counts.
