What the labour law requires on a payslip

The Labour Law for the Private Sector (Law No. 36 of 2012) does not list the items a payslip must show. What it regulates is payment and proof of payment. Under Article 46 the employer is only discharged from the wage once the worker signs a wage register, a payroll or a prescribed receipt, or once the wage is transferred to a bank at the worker's request.

Article 40 requires payment in Bahraini currency, unless a legally available foreign currency is agreed, on a working day and at the place of business. A monthly-paid worker is paid at least once a month. On termination the dues are paid at once, or within seven days if the worker left of his own initiative. Late payment carries compensation of 6% a year for the first six months, rising 1% for each further month up to 12%.

Deductions are limited: loan repayments at most 10% of the wage (25% for a housing loan the worker agreed to in writing, Article 44), and assignment or attachment of wages at most 25%, or 50% for alimony (Article 45).

Social contributions on each payslip

Social insurance contributions are set by Article 33 of the Social Insurance Law (Legislative Decree No. 24 of 1976), as replaced by Law No. 14 of 2022, which was issued on 18 April 2022. The employer's share is 17% of the insured wages and the insured employee's share is 7% of the monthly wage. They are paid to the Social Insurance Organization (SIO).

These are the shares the law ultimately reaches. The transitional article started the employer at 11% and the insured person at 6% when the law came into force, and raised them each year until they reach the Article 33 shares, so the percentage payable in a given month depends on where the schedule stands that year. Confirm the current figure with the SIO before running payroll.
