Writing amounts in words here
Section 18 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881 states that when the amount of a promissory note, bill of exchange or cheque is written differently in figures and in words, the amount in words is the amount payable. On a cheque, contract or receipt, the words therefore control.
A dishonoured cheque for insufficient funds is an offence under section 138. The penalty is up to one year in prison, a fine of up to three times the cheque amount, or both. The cheque must be presented within six months of its date or its validity, the payee must give written notice within 30 days of the bank's information, and the drawer has 30 days from the notice to pay.
