How employee tax is withheld
Australian employers withhold PAYG tax from each payment using the ATO's tax tables, so withholding follows the pay period (weekly, fortnightly, monthly) and the employee's TFN declaration, and is reported through Single Touch Payroll with every pay run. The annual tax return then settles the final bill.
Resident rates for 2026-27 are 15% on income above the tax-free threshold up to $45,000, 30% from $45,001 to $135,000, 37% from $135,001 to $190,000 and 45% above $190,000. From 2027-28 the first rate drops to 14%. For 2024-25 and 2025-26 the first rate is 16%. (Income Tax Rates Act 1986, Schedule 7, as amended by Act No. 28 of 2025.)
In years with 27 fortnightly or 53 weekly pay periods, employers can offer extra withholding to avoid a year-end tax debt. The PAYG withholding annual report summarises tax withheld and goes to the ATO each year.
