When a quote or proforma has legal weight
In Australia a quote carries legal weight mainly through consumer law and government buying rules.
Under the Australian Consumer Law (Schedule 2 of the Competition and Consumer Act 2010), a quote given to a consumer is a representation about price in connection with a possible supply, so section 48 applies: the quote must show one prominent single price for the goods or services, not just the parts of it. A quote addressed only to a company is outside that rule (section 48(4)).
Asking a business for a quote does not by itself turn the later sale into an unsolicited consumer agreement. Section 70(2) says an invitation merely to quote a price is not an invitation to negotiate, which matters for door-to-door and phone-call sales that carry cooling-off rights.
