Writing amounts in words here
Under section 8 of the Currency Act 1965, Australia's monetary unit is the dollar, and its denominations are the dollar and the cent, with one cent equal to one-hundredth of a dollar. In words, an amount is written as dollars and cents, for example one hundred and twenty dollars and fifty cents for $120.50, with the cents part left out when it is zero.
Neither the Cheques Act 1986 nor the Bills of Exchange Act 1909 sets a statutory rule for which prevails when the words and figures on a cheque differ, so the words and the figures should be written to match exactly, and the amount should be written in words in a way that leaves no space for additions.
