Writing amounts in words here
The unit of money in the Philippines is the peso, divided into one hundred centavos, with the sign P (Section 48 of Republic Act 7653, the New Central Bank Act). In words, an amount is therefore written in pesos and, where there is a fraction, in centavos. On cheques and contracts the figures are written alongside the words, which is why the rule on discrepancies below matters.
If the words and the figures disagree, Section 17(a) of the Negotiable Instruments Law (Act No. 2031) provides that the sum denoted by the words is the sum payable. The figures are consulted only when the words are ambiguous or uncertain. For that reason the amount in words must be written without abbreviations or corrections, and an invoice or cheque that shows two different amounts should be reissued rather than amended.
