Writing amounts in words here
The national currency is the Omani rial (rial Omani), which the Central Bank of Oman divides into 1,000 baisas. The Consumer Protection Law writes amounts as Omani rials, for example 2,000 Omani rials. Because the subunit is a thousandth, amounts are written to three decimals in figures, and in words the baisas follow the rials, for example twelve Omani rials and five hundred baisas for 12.500.
Under the Commercial Law (Royal Decree 55/1990), a bill of exchange whose amount is written in both words and figures is governed by the words if they differ, and where the amount is written several times in words or in figures, the lower amount prevails (Art. 418). The cheque provisions apply those bill rules so far as they are compatible with a cheque (Art. 522), so the words control on a cheque too.
A cheque must carry the word cheque in its body, the date and place of issue, the name of the drawee, the payee, an unconditional order to pay a fixed sum, the place of payment and the drawer's signature (Art. 523). A cheque issued in Oman and payable there may be drawn only on a bank; an instrument drawn on anyone else is not a valid cheque (Art. 525). For a contract, write the amount in words as well as figures, because the Commercial Law's words-over-figures rule is stated only for bills and cheques.
