The currency is the Malawi kwacha (MWK, written K), in use since 1971 when it replaced the Malawi Pound. Tambala coins were introduced the same year. Notes in circulation run from K20 to K1,000.
Section 9(2) of the Bills of Exchange Act (Cap. 48:02) settles any conflict between words and figures: where the sum payable is expressed in words and also in figures and the two differ, the sum denoted by the words is the amount payable. A cheque or bill should therefore carry the full amount in words, and a contract that writes the price both ways should match exactly.
