Writing amounts in words here
The Chinese currency is the renminbi (人民币). Its unit is the yuan (元), and the subsidiary units are the jiao (角) and the fen (分): 1 yuan is 10 jiao and 1 jiao is 10 fen (RMB Administration Regulations, Article 4). Chinese has no plural form, so "yuan" is the same for one and for many.
On a bill, cheque or settlement voucher the amount is written both in Chinese capital characters and in Arabic figures, and the two must agree. Under the Negotiable Instruments Law (Article 8), if they differ the instrument is invalid. The Payment and Settlement Measures (Article 13) add that a bank will not accept a settlement voucher with different amounts. Areas for ethnic minorities and foreign diplomatic missions may write the capital amount in their own script.
The amount, the date and the payee's name cannot be altered, and an altered instrument is void (Negotiable Instruments Law, Article 9; Payment and Settlement Measures, Article 12). Other items may be changed by the person who entered them, who signs the change.
