Rates: 2026 federal only. This is federal tax only. Provincial or territorial tax is charged on top and typically adds 25% to 50% to the total income tax bill, so this figure is not your full liability anywhere in Canada. 2026 is the first full year at the 14% lowest rate. The basic personal amount is a credit of 14% of $16,452, not a tax-free band, and it phases down to $14,829 across the 29% bracket. CPP, CPP2 and EI are not modelled. Only the enhanced portion is a deduction from income; base CPP and all EI are credits at 14%. Ontario levies a surtax on tax rather than income, and Quebec files separately with a 16.5% federal abatement. Neither can be expressed as a band.

How employee tax is withheld
Employers withhold income tax from each pay using the CRA payroll deductions tables or the T4127 formulas, based on the employee's Form TD1 personal tax credits return and a claim code. The 2026 federal TD1 uses the indexed basic personal amount, so employees receive the 2.0% indexation without filing a new form.
In the CRA's formulas, the enhanced portion of CPP and all CPP2 reduce the income on which tax is calculated, while the remaining base CPP and all EI premiums come off as credits at the lowest federal rate.
Withholdings are remitted to the CRA by the 15th day of the following month for a regular remitter (average monthly withholding amount up to $24,999.99). New small employers with a monthly withholding amount of $0 to $999.99 and a perfect compliance record can remit quarterly, on 15 April, 15 July, 15 October and 15 January. Accelerated remitters, with $25,000 or more, remit more often.
