Writing amounts in words here
Uganda's currency is the shilling (UGX, written USh). Section 17 of the Bank of Uganda Act makes the shilling the unit of currency and requires all monetary obligations and transactions to be expressed, recorded and settled in shillings, unless another law says otherwise or the parties lawfully agree on a different currency. In words, write "shilling" for one and "shillings" for any other amount, for example "Uganda Shillings One Million Five Hundred Thousand".
The Act still allows notes and coins in fractions of the shilling "expressed in cents" (section 22(1)), and coins below UGX 5 are legal tender only up to UGX 500 (section 23(2)). The Act leaves the choice of fractional denominations to the Bank of Uganda Board.
When the words and the figures on a cheque or other bill of exchange disagree, the words win. Section 8(2) of the Bills of Exchange Act (Cap. 68) says the sum denoted by the words is the amount payable, and section 72 treats a cheque as a bill of exchange drawn on a banker and payable on demand. Always check the words against the figures before you sign or deposit. Note also that from 1 January 2027 Bank of Uganda lowers the interbank cheque limit from UGX 10 million to UGX 5 million, according to its notice of 3 June 2026.
