Price rules that affect your markup

Thailand controls prices through the Prices of Goods and Services Act B.E. 2542, which the Central Committee on Prices of Goods and Services (กกร.) applies through the Department of Internal Trade in the Ministry of Commerce. The Committee lists controlled goods and services and chooses a level of control for each, from fixing the selling price, through a requirement to obtain approval before changing the price, to reporting of stock, quantity and cost structure. In June 2026 it kept 66 controlled goods and services for another year; in March 2026 the Department reported new controlled goods: plastic pellets, bottled drinking water, and seasoning sauces (fish sauce and soy sauce). Being on the list does not always mean the price is fixed: for many items the duty is to report and seek approval for increases.

Every seller and service provider must display retail prices under the Committee's Notification No. 68 B.E. 2568, dated 1 July 2025. The Ministry of Commerce explains that the price must be shown clearly, in Arabic numerals (other languages may be added), with the menu in Thai for food and drink (foreign languages may accompany it), with any service charge and VAT stated in full, and the price charged must match the price displayed.

A seller who does not display prices or charges a different price commits an offence under ss.28 and 40 of the Act, with a fine of up to THB 10,000. In August 2025 a provincial commerce office gave a restaurant that sold dishes without a price tag an administrative fine of THB 2,000. Complaints go to the Department of Internal Trade hotline 1569.
