The currency is the New Leone, introduced by a Bank of Sierra Leone public notice of 11 August 2021 under section 30 of the Bank of Sierra Leone Act 2019. It has notes of 1, 2, 5, 10 and 20 leones and coins of 1 Cent, 5 Cents, 10 Cents, 25 Cents and 50 Cents, so the subunit is the cent, written "Cent" for one and "Cents" for more than one. The notice does not prescribe a wording for cheques or contracts, so name the currency in the document.
If the words and the figures on a cheque or bill differ, the words win. Section 9(2) of the Bills of Exchange Act (Cap. 227) says that where the sum payable is expressed in words and also in figures and there is a discrepancy between the two, the sum denoted by the words is the amount payable.
