How the number is built and checked
A NIP has 10 digits, written as one string without spaces or dashes. The first three digits are the code of the tax office that assigned it and the last is a check digit (biznes.gov.pl, page published 21.02.2022).
The official verification is the list of VAT taxpayers (Wykaz podatników VAT, the "biała lista") kept by the Head of the National Revenue Administration under art. 96b of the VAT Act and published in the Public Information Bulletin (BIP) of the Ministry of Finance. A check can be made as of a chosen date up to five years back.
The list returns the name, the NIP, the status (registered as "podatnik VAT czynny", registered as "podatnik VAT zwolniony", or refused or deleted), REGON and KRS numbers where assigned, the registered address, the dates and legal basis of registration, refusal or deletion, and the business bank accounts that were reported and confirmed through the STIR clearing system.
What this does and does not tell you
This page checks arithmetic, not registration. Every NIP carries a check digit calculated from the digits before it, which is what catches a typo. Confirming that a business is genuinely registered means asking Krajowa Administracja Skarbowa, because only they hold the register.
