Writing amounts in words here
Under the Cheque Law, the cheque must contain the word "czek" in its text, in the language in which it is written, and an unconditional order to pay a specified sum (art. 1 pkt 1 and 2 of Prawo czekowe).
When the sum is written in words and in figures and they differ, the cheque is valid for the sum written in words (art. 9). When the sum is written several times in words, or several times in figures, the cheque is valid for the smaller sum.
Bills of exchange follow the same rule: if the bill sum is written in words and figures and they differ, the bill is valid for the sum in words, and for the smaller sum if the amount is written several times in words or figures (art. 6 of Prawo wekslowe). Writing the amount in words as well as figures is therefore the safeguard that decides which figure counts.
