Price rules that affect your markup
In Pakistan, price display is regulated by provincial consumer law. In Punjab, section 18 of the Punjab Consumer Protection Act 2005 requires a trader to display a notice of the retail or wholesale price of every item for sale in the shop or display centre, unless a price catalogue is available for issue to customers. Section 19 requires a receipt showing the date of sale, a description of the goods, their quantity and price, and the seller's name and address. Section 20 requires the return and refund policy to be shown on a sign at the point of purchase before the sale is completed.
A trader who advertises a price must also honour it. Section 22 bars bait advertising and requires goods advertised at a specified price to be offered at that price for a reasonable period and in reasonable quantities. A complaint under sections 18 or 19 can lead to a fine of up to Rs 50,000 imposed by the Authority (section 23(1)).
