Writing amounts in words here
On a cheque, promissory note or bill of exchange, section 18 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881 settles any mismatch: if the amount is stated differently in figures and in words, the amount in words is the amount payable. If the words are ambiguous or uncertain, the amount may be worked out by referring to the figures.
In practice, write the amount in words in full on its own line, begin it with the currency (rupees) and close it with the word only so nothing can be added, and write the same number in figures in the box beside it.
