Amount in Words Converter (Mauritius)

The unit of currency is the rupee, divided into 100 cents (Bank of Mauritius Act 2004, s.34). In English the words are "rupee" (one) and "rupees" (more than one), and "cent" and "cents" for the subunit, so Rs 1,250.50 reads "one thousand two hundred and fifty rupees and fifty cents". The cent is used in words only where the amount has cents.

Where a cheque or bill of exchange shows the sum in words and also in figures and the two differ, the sum denoted by the words is the amount payable (Bills of Exchange Act, Cap 393, s.8(2)). A cheque is a bill of exchange drawn on a banker and payable on demand, and the same rule therefore applies to it (s.71(1)). A bill is not invalid because it is post-dated or dated on a Sunday (s.12(2)), so writing the amount in words clearly matters more than the date.
