How the number is built and checked
The Agenzia delle Entrate runs a free online service, Verifica partita Iva, at telematici.agenziaentrate.gov.it/VerificaPIVA. The user enters the Partita IVA and a security code (a captcha, also available as audio).
If the number is correctly registered in the Anagrafe tributaria, the answer shows its status (active, suspended in the case of a business lease, or ceased), the name of the holder, the start date and any suspension or cessation dates, and whether the number belongs to a VAT group or to a member of one. The same page links to the EU check (VIES) for communitary VAT numbers and to a separate tool to verify a codice fiscale.
What this does and does not tell you
This page checks arithmetic, not registration. Every Partita IVA carries a check digit calculated from the digits before it, which is what catches a typo. Confirming that a business is genuinely registered means asking Agenzia delle Entrate, because only they hold the register.
