Rates: Tax year 2026-27 (new regime). New tax regime with the ₹75,000 standard deduction; income up to ₹12 lakh after deduction pays nothing because of the rebate (section 87A of the 1961 Act, carried into the Income-tax Act 2025 from 1 April 2026). Employee PF contributions do not reduce tax under this regime. Add 4% health and education cess to the tax; the old regime with exemptions is not modelled.

How employee tax is withheld

For tax year 2026-27 the default regime for individuals is section 202 of the Income-tax Act, 2025: nil up to 4,00,000 rupees, then 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25% and 30% in steps of 4,00,000, with the 30% rate above 24,00,000, plus a 4% health and education cess on the tax and any surcharge. Salaried taxpayers get a standard deduction of 75,000 rupees, and the Government states that no tax is payable up to 12 lakh of income, or 12.75 lakh for a salaried person, in the new regime.

The new regime allows few deductions. Chapter VI-A deductions such as 80C, 80D and 80G cannot be claimed, except 80CCD(2), 80CCH and 80JJAA, and House Rent Allowance exemption under section 10(13A) is not available. An employee's own provident fund contribution is an 80C item, so it does not reduce taxable salary in the new regime. An employee's claims for deduction reach the employer on Form 12BB, and the employer certifies the tax deducted on salary on Form 16 under section 203 of the 1961 Act.
