Writing amounts in words here
On cheques, the amount in words and the amount in figures must both be written correctly the first time. Since 1 December 2010 the Reserve Bank of India has prohibited alterations and corrections on cheques that are cleared through the image-based Cheque Truncation System (CTS), under the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007 (RBI circular of 22 June 2010, clarifying paragraph 1.8 of its circular of 22 February 2010). The ban does not apply to cheques cleared by MICR clearing, non-MICR clearing, over-the-counter payment or direct collection. A cheque with a wrongly written amount should therefore be replaced, not overwritten.
