How employee tax is withheld
For 2026 Revenue taxes a single person's pay at 20% up to 44,000 euro a year and 40% above. The married rate band is 53,000 euro for one income. Tax credits are deducted from the tax: 2,000 euro single person's credit, 2,000 euro employee credit, 4,000 euro for a married couple, and up to 1,950 euro for the home carer credit. The band and credits are unchanged from 2025.
Taxable pay is gross pay less ordinary contributions the employee makes, which covers pension-type contributions. PRSI and USC are not taken off first: they are separate charges calculated on gross pay.
The employer reports each payroll to Revenue on or before the pay date. The monthly statement becomes the return on the 14th of the following month. Payment is due on the 14th, or the 23rd when the return is filed and paid through ROS.
