For cheques and other negotiable instruments the uniform rule is UCC § 3-114, Contradictory Terms of Instrument: if an instrument contains contradictory terms, typewritten terms prevail over printed terms, handwritten terms prevail over both, and words prevail over numbers. This is the uniform text of Article 3, enacted by each state, so the state's own version of the code governs.
