How employee tax is withheld
PAYE on a salary is worked out by annualising the pay: weekly pay is multiplied by 52, fortnightly by 26, four-weekly by 13 and monthly by 12, with cents dropped. Tax is then calculated on the annual figure at the resident bands, which are unchanged for the 2026-27 year: 10.5% up to $15,600, 17.5% to $53,500, 30% to $78,100, 33% to $180,000 and 39% above.
The ACC earners' levy at 1.75% is added to the PAYE deduction up to earnings of $156,641. A student loan deduction is 12% of pay above the repayment threshold of $24,128 a year for primary income and 12% of the whole pay for secondary income.
Employee KiwiSaver is calculated on gross pay and is not subtracted before PAYE is worked out, so it does not reduce taxable pay.
