How the number is built and checked
A Dutch btw-id has the country code NL, nine digits, the letter B and a two-digit subnummer, for example NL123456789B01. For a sole trader it contains no burgerservicenummer. The separate omzetbelastingnummer has the same shape but carries the BSN for a zzp'er and is for contact with the Belastingdienst only.
The official check is the European Commission's VIES service. Enter the number without the NL prefix, using capital letters. A btw-id returns 'Ja, geldig btw-nummer'; an omzetbelastingnummer returns 'Ongeldig btw-nummer voor grensoverschrijdende transacties binnen de EU'. A format match alone does not show that the number is active.
What this does and does not tell you
This page checks arithmetic, not registration. Every btw-nummer carries a check digit calculated from the digits before it, which is what catches a typo. Confirming that a business is genuinely registered means asking Belastingdienst, because only they hold the register.
