Writing amounts in words here
The currency is the pound sterling, written as pound in the singular and pounds in the plural. It is divided into 100 pence; the subunit is the penny in the singular and pence in the plural. A sum such as £1,250.40 is written one thousand two hundred and fifty pounds and forty pence.
Section 9(2) of the Bills of Exchange Act 1882 states that where the sum payable is expressed in words and also in figures and there is a discrepancy between the two, the sum denoted by the words is the amount payable. Contracts should use the same rule, so state the amount in words and figures and make sure they agree.
