Writing amounts in words here

Ethiopian tax statutes write a money amount as the figure followed by the words in brackets, with Birr in the singular: birr 50,000 (Fifty Thousand Birr) in Proclamation No. 983/2016, and ETB 100,000.00 (One Hundred Thousand Birr) in Proclamation No. 1434/2026. The statutes read for this page do not spell out a subunit, so on a contract or invoice follow the same pattern and state the full amount in Birr.

If the words and figures disagree, the Commercial Code decides. For a cheque, article 837 says that where the amount is written in both words and figures and they differ, the amount in words is paid, and where it is written more than once in words or more than once in figures and they differ, the smaller sum is paid. The Code applies the same two rules to a bill of exchange. Write the words carefully and only once.
