Price rules that affect your markup

The rule that affects every shop is section 11 of the Consumer Protection Act (Cap. 42:07): goods and services must be displayed with their price, in Pula, in clear and legible letters, in a prominent position where they are supplied. A price counts as displayed if it is attached to the goods, can reasonably be read as the price of that item, or is printed in a catalogue or brochure given to the consumer. A supplier may not charge a consumer more than the price displayed (section 11(3)).

Advertised prices are policed separately. Section 7 bans bait advertising: a supplier may not advertise goods at a specified price in a way that misleads consumers about whether they can buy them at that price. Advertising with the intention of not supplying the quantity reasonably expected to meet demand is an offence carrying a fine of up to P50,000, imprisonment for up to three years, or both, and any quantity limit must be disclosed in the advertisement itself (section 7(2)-(3)).
