Writing amounts in words here
The monetary unit is the Pula, divided into one hundred Thebe, with the symbols "P" and "t" (Bank of Botswana Act, Cap. 55:01, section 20(1)). In words an amount reads, for example, "Two thousand five hundred Pula and fifty Thebe".
When the words and the figures on a cheque or bill disagree, the words win. Section 8(2) of the Bills of Exchange Act (Cap. 46:02) says that where the sum payable is expressed in words and also in figures and there is a discrepancy, the sum denoted by the words is the amount payable. A cheque is a bill of exchange drawn on a banker and payable on demand (section 2), so the rule applies to it directly. Check that the words and the figures match before signing a cheque, bill or contract.
